What Is Arirang? The Spiritual Meaning Behind the Beloved Korean Folksong & the BTS Comeback Album

Have you ever heard the expression Arirang?

If you’ve visited Body & Brain, you may have heard the song playing softly in the background…

Or maybe you’ve recently seen Arirang appearing in headlines, as global K-pop group announced their upcoming comeback album and tour titled Arirang.

Many BTS fans are now wondering:

What does Arirang mean, and why did BTS choose it for their comeback?

In Korean culture, Arirang is traditionally understood as a love song, which may feel a little unexpected for a “homecoming.”

But within Body & Brain, we often reflect on a deeper message within it —the feeling of wandering, longing, and ultimately finding our way back home to ourselves.

What is the Meaning and Origin of Arirang?

Arirang comes from the beloved Korean folk song, passed down through generations for hundreds of years. Sung in many regional variations, it has become one of the most recognizable and cherished songs in Korean culture.

In Korea, Arirang is widely known as a love song, one that expresses longing, devotion, separation, and the deep emotions of the human heart. The song captures feelings that people across generations have experienced: love, loss, hope, and the desire to reunite.

And within the Body & Brain community, we have embraced Arirang in a slightly different way: a love song and ode to our own soul.

What is the Spiritual Meaning of Arirang?

When we approach the song from this perspective, Arirang becomes a reflection of one’s journey through life:

“If you abandon me (referring to the soul),

Your feet will be sore before you go ten miles.

Just as there are many stars in the clear sky,

There are also many dreams in our heart.

There, over there, that mountain is Baekdu Mountain (birthplace),

Where even in the middle of winter days, flowers bloom.”

— Arirang (English translation)

These words carry an important reminder: when we move away from our true self, life can feel heavy and difficult. But even in challenging times, remembering who we truly are gives us hope, trust, and the strength to create a meaningful life.

From this perspective, every experience, including struggles, becomes part of the beauty of our journey. Arirang symbolizes this joy of rediscovering our true self.

Even when life’s responsibilities, careers, families, or daily routines, distract us, our soul never abandons us. It waits patiently, like a home we can always return to.

No matter how far we wander, the path back is always available. And when we reconnect with that deeper part of ourselves:

  • Our challenges gain meaning.
  • Our struggles become teachers.
  • Our experiences guide the journey of completing our soul.

When we are connected to our True Self, we are not merely moving through life… We are truly alive.

What Does Arirang Mean for BTS’ Comeback?

While BTS has not publicly explained the meaning behind the title, many fans have speculated.

Some see it as a tribute to Korean heritage, especially as the members return after serving their country. Others feel it evokes the longing and emotional hurdles they have overcome while apart.

We like to imagine another layer: what if it also reflects their human journey back to their true selves — after years away from their purpose, returning home (to the band, to their fans) to their shared path and authentic selves.

Through this lens, Arirang becomes a reminder that even when life leads us through challenges, everything can regain meaning when we return to our true self. And everything heals when we come home to ourselves.

Begin Your Journey Back to Your True Self

The spirit of Arirang reminds us that the journey back to our true self is the most valuable experience we can have in our whole life.

If you feel called to explore Arirang, and experience the spirit of Arirang even deeper, Body & Brain offers several ways to deepen your connection with your authentic self — through our classes, workshops, or even the book Finding Your True Self by Ilchi Lee.

What do you think about the deeper spiritual meaning of Arirang? Do you believe it could be the underlying meaning of BTS’ comeback?

Whatever your perspective, we hope Arirang finds its way into your life.
